Maldivers pledged to provide data and assistance for the Coral Reef component in the Climate Change Adaptation Project (CCAP) in Baa Atoll Maalhos. CCAP is an EU funded project implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

Experts working on the project conducted training on how to monitor the health of the coral reef, water quality, the coastline, and the terrestrial environment. The staff of Maldivers dive centre, locals of Maalhos and people from nearby islands including staff from the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office took part in the training.

Baseline data portraying the status of the island environment was taken in March 2018 and the areas were resurveyed in June 2018, and the data was submitted to the National Coral Reef Database. We hope that this data would show how the environment is changing over the years and the information gathered would give all who are involved in protecting the natural ecosystem better knowledge on how to do so.

Maalhos is a local island located in the biosphere reserve of Baa Atoll and it hosts a unique reef system. Being part of the local community, we feel it is our duty to ensure that the reef and the island ecosystem remains healthy and resilient. We would continue to take more data and contribute to the database in the future and we would like to invite anyone who is interested to take part in this to join us during our surveys.
